Sharing session on Global Warming Strategy in KAIST-UCB-VNU Global Climate Change Research Center

With the aim of strengthening highly quality activities in science and technology in 2022, on June 24, 2022, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Trung Thanh, Rector of International School, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-IS) had a meeting with Korean partner institutions (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Jeju National University (JNU).

The agenda of the meeting was to share the idea of setting up the joint center between Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) – University of California, Berkeley (UCB), USA and Vietnam National University, Hanoi with the topic: Global Warming Strategy in KAIST-UCB-VNU Global Climate Change Research Center.

Representative from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology paid a working visit to the International School.

This is one of the activities of the project “Research and application of nanotechnology to manufacture materials for storing and converting carbon and hydrogen gas”, which is co-funded by the Ministry of Science & ICT (MSIT) and the National Research Foundation of South Korea (NRF) under the framework of the R&D Cooperation Program with advanced and developing countries by the Institute of Nanotechnology (KINC) of KAIST.

Attending the sharing session were professors from KAIST (Prof. Jung Hee-Tae, KAIST Chair professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Director of KAIST Institute for Nanocentury, Director of KAIST Polymer Program, Member of Korean Academy of Engineering, and Vice-President of Korean Environmental Science Society), JNU (Prof. Tae-sun Min, Director, Jeju International Animal Research Center (JIA), NCP (National Contact Point) of MST (Ministry of Science & Technology, Korea) for Horizon 2020 fund of EU); Prof. Yong Suk Chung, CEO of Phytomix Corporation, Project Lead for Field-based High Throughput System in Plant Science Institute in Iowa State University); guests, experts in the fields of environment, climate change and biology from VNU affiliated units: Institute of Natural Resources and Environment (Assoc.Prof.Dr. Luu The Anh, Director), Institute of Microbiology and Technology Biotechnology (Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dinh Thuy Hang, Head of Applied Microbial Ecology Department), University of Education (Dr. Bui Thi Thanh Huong, Director of Center for Educational Research and Application); Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences (Prof.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Truc, Head of Department of Climate Change and Sustainable Development) as well as the leaderships, lecturers of functional offices, Faculty of Applied Sciences, and research groups from VNU-IS.

Prof. Jung Hee-Tae – Director of the KAIST Institute for Nano shared the idea of establishing KAIST-UCB-VNU Global Climate Change Research Center.

At the sharing session, Prof. Jung Hee-Tae shared ideas on the establishment of a Joint Research Center such as research team members, roles, responsibilities of all involved institutes, climate change issues and measures/strategies for adaptation, research objectives, implementation stages, expected outcomes. After his sharing, the Vietnamese scientists also shared the research results on climate change adaptation of the VNU research team, discussed cooperation possibilities of KAIST’s research results to be transferred to Vietnamese research groups, seeking opportunities to exploit BIG DATA from KAIST’s research team. Both sides will make efforts to promote cooperation for mutual benefits in the coming time.

Vietnamese and Korean participants at the meeting.

The establishment of the joint center and its potential results are expected to contribute to the development of science and technology in Vietnam. This is also a good opportunity for VNU scholars to exchange experiences in research and development projects with Korean scholars and experts.
