Tết Through an international student’s Eyes: “The whole country slows down, and everyone turns toward family”

🧧

After nearly a year of studying in Vietnam, Comaan De, a student majoring in Management Information Systems, shares that Tết has left him with a distinctly different impression.

For him, it is not merely a holiday, but a shared national state of mind: an atmosphere that is both calm and warm, naturally prompting people to begin again in a better way.

For Comaan, the most striking memory of Tết lies not in any single ritual, but in the broader atmosphere. As Tết approaches, he describes Vietnam as entering an entirely different mode: life slows down, the streets feel more peaceful, and the spirit of reunion appears everywhere.

It feels as if the whole country is turning toward family and the idea of a fresh start.

One of his favorite moments was going out for bia hơi during Tết and enjoying the experience with friends. While it may sound simple, that simplicity is precisely what made Tết feel so authentic to him. It was not just time off—it was the sense of living within a shared national mood, where people collectively step across the threshold into a new year.

Practical Suggestions for Newcomers

If asked what an international student newly arriving in Vietnam should do to truly “feel” Tết, Comaan offers two practical suggestions:

  • Experience the city before Tết: This is when the festive energy is most vivid: streets are decorated, flower markets are bustling, and crowds carry an unmistakable sense of anticipation.
  • Spend time with Vietnamese friends: No need for elaborate plans—sharing a glass of bia hơi or visiting a local neighborhood allows you to feel the warmth and meaning behind the celebration.

For Comaan, Tết is fundamentally about connection. Being alongside local friends allows international students to feel the warmth more deeply, rather than experiencing it only as a tourist.
