On February 9, the International School, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-IS) organized a special scientific seminar featuring Professor Fong-Chin Su – one of the world’s leading experts in Biomedical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan (China).
The seminar, themed “Experience in Building and Developing a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Biomedical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University,” attracted significant interest from lecturers, researchers, and students, opening up many prospects for future international cooperation. The event was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chu Dinh Toi – Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences; Dr. Ha Manh Hung – Vice Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Thuan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hai Thanh – senior experts of the School.
Professor Fong-Chin Su’s seminar left a deep impression, inspiring and motivating the academic community at the International School, affirming its vision and development orientation for the future, particularly in the field of Biomedical Engineering Technology. This event opens up opportunities for the International School to promote research and training in advanced areas such as biomedical engineering, smart medical devices, digital healthcare, AI technology applied in healthcare, and elderly care solutions. Professor Fong-Chin Su is an influential expert in the global field of Biomedical Engineering. Currently, he is a Chair Professor and the founding Director and CEO of the Medical Device Innovation Center (MDIC) – a center of excellence at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan (China). He also serves as the Executive Director of the Taiwan-Thailand Science and Technology Center. The Professor has had an admirable scientific career, holding many important positions such as Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of Taiwan (China), CEO of the Biotechnology Initiative, and Executive Vice President of NCKU (2019-2023).
He is honored among the Top 0.5% of leading scholars worldwide by ScholarGPS, with over 11,000 Google Scholar citations and an h-index of 57. Professor Fong-Chin Su is a member of many prestigious organizations such as AIMBE, IAMBE, IUPESM, IAM, and has received numerous distinguished awards, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Taiwan Society of Biomechanics (China) and the National Industrial Innovation Award. Under his leadership, MDIC has become a Center of Excellence for medical devices, supporting the submission of 122 patents, high-value technology transfers, and the incubation of dozens of successful startups.

The seminar was not only an opportunity to learn from NCKU’s valuable experience but also opened up promising prospects for cooperation between the International School and NCKU. Professor Su specifically mentioned international cooperation programs, including student and researcher exchanges, overseas research programs, visits by elite researchers, and international internship programs in Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Technology, which are being successfully implemented at both institutions.
