Prize for the best MSc. thesis of the Master Programme 2000-2002 in Wageningen University, the Netherlands. Thesis title is “Is Economic Growth Pro-Poor in Vietnam? Evidence from 1993-1998”.

Second prize of the 2007 Global Development Medal (Global Development Network) for the research paper “Is a Governmental Micro-Credit Program for the Poor Really Pro-Poor? Evidence from Vietnam”.

The Best Paper in Comparative Policy Award 2014 for the paper “The Impact of Recentralization on Public Services: A Quasi-Experiment on Abolishing Elected Councils in Vietnam” with Edmunds Makesky, and Tran Anh. This paper is also awarded the McGillivray Award for Best Paper in Political Economy delivered at the American Political Science Association’s (APSA) 2013 Annual Meeting (August 29 – September 1, Chicago, Illinois).

The 2015 Best Paper in The Journal of International Trade & Economic Development for the paper “The Impact of Trade Facilitation on Poverty and Inequality in Low and Middle-Income Countries”, The Journal of International Trade & Economic Development, 24(3), 315–340.
